In this article, I’m going to share a few first date conversation starters that will make all your first dates fun, interesting, and far from boring.

Most guys have absolutely no clue what to do or say on a first date, and who can blame them? Most guys have never read these tips!

The number one thing you need to remember is that a first date is NOT a “try out”, where you’re trying to prove yourself to a woman. Far from it.

That means you should NEVER bring up boring topics like your family, your work, or where you grew up…unless she asks.

(By the way, if she does, you should answer that your family is in the traveling circus business, you flip burgers for a living, and you grew up in a small town in the middle of Antarctic called “Ice”, just to keep it fun.)

I feel like I should repeat this. You should NOT look at a first date as an opportunity to impress a girl, because chances are she’s already been on enough boring first dates with guys that bragged for 2 hours about their great job and close relationship with their mother. Guess where they ended up at the end of the night?

The key to a great first date is to relax, act comfortable, and just treat her like an old friend.

Bring up current events for first date conversation starters (entertainment is best, try to stay away from religion and politics). Ask her if she thinks Tom Cruise was sent from another planet full of couch jumping midgets.

Talk about the things going on around you. If you know the area you’re in, tell her about the history of it. If there’s another couple around who are clearly on their first date, try to guess what they’re talking about (and make fun of the things I mentioned above). If you’re at a restaurant, ask her which couple in the room she thinks is the oddest match, just for fun.

Talk about what’s INTERESTING about you. Do you like to travel? Where is the coolest place you’ve ever been and why? Where the coolest place she’s ever been?

Ask her what she would do if she had all the money in the world for 24 hours. Where would she go? Who would she bring? What would she do?

See how these things are so much more interesting than what she does for work or where she grew up? These kind of topics are great for first date conversation starters because they open up all kinds of things you can talk about, and before you know it, you’ll both be having a great time and getting to know each other, instead of learning how many brothers and sisters you each have.

If you frame these first date conversation starters properly, and ask her interesting questions about herself, she’ll have a great time no matter where you go or what you do, and chances are she’ll be knocking down your door for a second one. Have you ever wanted to change the subject and talk about something more interesting or relevant? You can. You don’t have to be at the mercy of a bore or windbag. And when your date or interviewer asks questions you don’t want to answer, you can deftly change the subject and talk about something else. Media trainers have a name for this conversation technique: bridging.  I learned this handy switcheroo tool from an unlikely source. 

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (yes, the Beatles’ guru), told this story about being interviewed on American TV. It was the early 60s, and to Western eyes, he must have been an unusual sight. His hair touched his shoulders, and he was wrapped in white silk, sitting cross-legged on a couch, holding a flower.

Today’s interviewers do their homework, or their producers do. They find out ahead of time what’s special about each guest, other than his appearance. What is his message? How can he add value to the viewers at home?

If this TV host had such notes, he didn’t use them. He took one look at his peculiar-looking guest and blurted, “What do you eat?”  

If Maharishi was startled by this off-beat question, he didn’t show it. He was a man on a spiritual mission. Thousands had attended his lectures in India. He did not come half-way around the world to discuss food. He could have said, “What a silly question!” But that’s offensive, not a gracious way to change the subject.

Maharishi never had media training, but he had a message to deliver. Keeping his purpose in mind, he answered the question he wished he’d been asked. He launched into his favorite metaphor about the source and nature of life: “Water the root to enjoy the fruit.”   

Since this is a story about conversations, not spiritual development, I’ll leave the rest of his answer at that. What would have made it a perfect reply?  

How to Change the Subject 

The best reply would have been something like this:  ”Many people have asked that question, and what I want to tell you and your viewers is how to enjoy life. It is so much simpler than what you eat. Take this flower for example….”   This technique is called bridging. You start with where the other person is and you create a transition, a bridge, to where you want to go. Try it with…

• job interviewers
• long-winded colleagues
• boring relatives
• friends who can’t stop talking about the latest scandal or Michael Jackson

Now that you’re aware of bridging, listen carefully when politicians answer journalists’ questions. You’ll hear how skilled speakers bend questions to get their point across. Listen for it! And, of course, practice your bridging skills just for fun. You don’t even have to be talking to practice. Just pick a sentence that someone else has just said and mentally bridge to a new conversation topic. Later, when you really need to change the subject, you’ll do it smoothly, without offending anyone.

The aim of Ice-Breakers is to establish an agreeable environment for proceedings to happen by helping the participants feel at ease. These methods are all the more necessary when the people involved don’t know each other well enough to make a good beginning. An ice-breaker will assist the participants with becoming relaxed and also set the mood for a discussion to develop. This relaxed state of mind will greatly aid the participants with being more focused and receptive so they can actively listen to all forms of communication.

Ice breakers are used not only in the beginning, but also when the meeting is in the midway or reaches a difficult situation. The content and timing of using an ice-breaker doesn’t need to be given excessive consideration – as some individuals instinctively understand how to implement an ice-breaker. With minimal training, others can easily learn this skill as well.

Ice-breakers are basically small exercises that inspire individual enthusiasm – making interpersonal situations more favourable, with the usual overall result of more meaningful interactions. Some of the commonly used ones are:

1. True or False – Ask each individual to state three facts about themselves, two of which are correct, and one false. The other members are to guess at the incorrect statement. The individual who guesses the False statement is then the next up for the following phase of the game.

2. Inferring – Ask each person to write a list of their choices, for example, favourite animal, flower, and personal hobbies. Read out these details to the group one by one without revealing the name of the individual being discussed, and then ask the others to guess who was just being talked about.

3. Ask the participants to state two or three adjectives about themselves that start with the same letter as the initial of their first name. This generally enhances everyone’s thought process.

4. Physical exercises will remove any lethargic feeling some may have, for instance, ask the participants to stretch their arms and legs.

Some of the Do’s and Don’ts that can help in the successful use of ice-breakers are:

Do’s

- The game specified should be appropriate and tailored to the group at hand.

- Make the instructions as simple as possible to understand.

- Watch the participants to ensure that they are having fun with the process.

- Irrespective of how much effort you have put into devising a good ice-breaker, it may not work. So, always have a back-up plan in place.

- Make sure that you have the right number of people for the game.

Don’ts

- Don’t go for ice-breakers which might make the participants feel uncomfortable, physically or mentally.

- Don’t force anyone to participate.

- Don’t be unorganized. Have all of the material you might need, as any delay can quickly make the atmosphere lose direction and focus.

- Don’t underestimate the time that might be needed for completing this activity.

- Don’t limit the use of ice-breakers to the start of a meeting

Finally, as a general rule of thumb – insert Ice-Breakers whenever needed.

1. Obsess about getting the details right. 

It goes like this: “I had the most exciting rafting trip ever. It was last August. No, it was July. No, it was June, the month after the basement flooded. No, it was the year before that….”

Unless you’re testifying in court, don’t quibble about details. Quibbling messes up your story’s flow, and it puts your listeners to ZZ-zzz-zzz-sleep. We’ve all heard it, and now you’ll catch yourself before you do it. 

2. Be a know-it-all.

Eight friends were sailing off the island of Hawaii. They talked about where to go next. Should they head toward Kona, or go the other direction? Fred said, “There are NO good anchorages around Kona. The snorkeling stinks.” He said it so stubbornly and authoritatively that no one dared contradict him — not the boat’s captain nor the owner, not even Gaelyn, a licensed Coast Guard captain who had happily anchored and snorkeled in several spots near Kona. End of discussion. 

Fortunately, Fred had a change of heart. Or perhaps it was an opening of his mind. The next morning he took Gaelyn aside. “You’ve sailed around here. What’s your experience?” Just like that the conversation resumed.

3. Talk about someone your talk buddy hasn’t heard of. 

We’ve gotta curb our desire to talk about our friends (or worse, friends of friends). Frankly, unless it’s a terrific, outstanding, edge-of-your-seat story, it’s BORing. Here’s an example:  

“Oh, you’re a writer? My friend Susan has written seven novels set on the south coast of Ikkelsfahrt. There’s this cute dog, see….” 

What I’d rather hear is “Oh, you’re a writer? My friend Susan is a writer, too. She could give you excellent tips on marketing your book. Would you be interested in getting in touch?”  

Before launching into your story, ask yourself: Is this information relevant, interesting,  or useful to my listener?
